Suede Sole Maintenance: Brushing, Cleaning and Resoling

Why Suede Soles Deserve Your Attention

If you've invested in a proper pair of tango shoes, chances are they have suede soles. There's a reason for that: suede offers the perfect balance of grip and slide that tango demands. But like any fine tool, suede soles need regular care to perform at their best.

Neglect them, and you'll find yourself either sticking to the floor mid-giro or sliding uncontrollably through a volcada. Neither is a pleasant surprise at a Saturday night milonga in London.

Understanding Your Suede Soles

Suede leather has a napped finish — tiny fibres that stand up from the surface. These fibres create just enough friction to give you control while still allowing the smooth pivots and slides that tango requires. Over time, these fibres get compressed, dirty, and worn. When that happens, your connection to the floor changes, and so does your dance.

Different floors respond differently to suede condition. The polished wood at many London venues demands well-maintained soles. A floor that felt perfect last week can feel treacherous if your soles have picked up grime from a different surface.

Regular Brushing: Your Most Important Habit

A wire suede brush is the single most important tool in your tango shoe care kit. Here's how to use it effectively:

  • Brush before every milonga. A quick once-over lifts the nap and removes surface dust.
  • Brush in one direction — go from toe to heel in firm, consistent strokes.
  • Pay extra attention to the ball of the foot, where most of your pivoting happens and where compression is greatest.
  • Use a brass wire brush for regular maintenance and a stiffer steel brush for soles that have become very smooth or compacted.

Many dancers keep a small brush in their shoe bag and give their soles a quick treatment during the cortina. It takes thirty seconds and makes a noticeable difference.

Deep Cleaning Your Soles

Brushing handles daily maintenance, but every few weeks — or more often if you dance frequently — your soles benefit from a deeper clean.

The Sandpaper Method

Use fine-grit sandpaper (120–180 grit) to restore heavily worn suede:

  1. Place the sandpaper on a flat surface, grit side up.
  2. Run the sole of the shoe across the sandpaper using light, even pressure.
  3. Work in one direction, covering the entire sole.
  4. Follow up with your suede brush to remove dust and lift the nap.

This removes the top layer of compressed, dirty suede and exposes fresh fibres beneath. Don't press too hard — you're refreshing the surface, not grinding it down.

Dealing with Sticky Spots

If your soles have picked up something sticky — candle wax from a milonga, drinks spillage, or residue from a particularly dirty floor — try these approaches:

  • Rubber eraser: A clean pencil eraser can lift sticky residue without damaging the suede.
  • Masking tape: Press tape firmly onto the affected area and peel away. Repeat until clean.
  • Suede cleaner: Purpose-made suede cleaning solutions are available, but use them sparingly and allow the sole to dry completely before dancing.

When to Resole Your Tango Shoes

Even with perfect maintenance, suede soles eventually wear through. Here are the signs that it's time for a resole:

  • Visible leather beneath the suede — if you can see smooth patches where the suede has worn away entirely, especially under the ball of the foot.
  • Inconsistent grip — some areas grip while others slide, making your dance unpredictable.
  • The sole feels thin — when you can feel every imperfection in the floor through the sole, the material has worn too thin for comfort.
  • Brushing no longer helps — if a thorough brushing and sandpaper treatment can't restore reasonable grip, the suede is spent.

Resoling Options

You have several choices when it's time to resole:

  • Professional cobbler: A good cobbler can apply new suede soles to most tango shoes. In London, look for cobblers experienced with dance shoes — not all understand the specific requirements.
  • DIY suede patches: Pre-cut suede sole patches with adhesive backing are available from dance shoe suppliers. These are a decent interim solution but rarely last as long as a professional resole.
  • Send back to the manufacturer: Some brands offer resoling services. Comme il Faut and Madame Pivot, for example, have loyal followings partly because of their after-sale support.

Expect to pay between £20 and £50 for a professional resole in London. Given that quality tango shoes can cost £150 to £300, resoling is excellent value.

Prevention: Protecting Your Soles Between Dances

The best maintenance is prevention. A few simple habits will extend the life of your suede soles dramatically:

  • Never wear your tango shoes outside. This is the cardinal rule. Pavement, rain, and outdoor grime will destroy suede soles in minutes.
  • Store shoes in a breathable bag — not plastic, which traps moisture. A cotton shoe bag is ideal.
  • Let shoes dry naturally after dancing. Your feet sweat, and that moisture needs to evaporate before you store them.
  • Alternate between two pairs if you dance several times a week. This gives each pair time to recover.
  • Carry a clean cloth to wipe your soles if you accidentally step off the dance floor.

A Note on Different Floor Types

London's tango venues offer a variety of floor surfaces, and your sole condition interacts with each differently. Freshly polished parquet can be dangerously slippery with new suede, while a slightly worn sole might be perfect. Conversely, a rough wooden floor or a sprung floor with a matte finish might need pristine suede to avoid feeling sticky.

Experienced London dancers often adjust their maintenance routine depending on where they're dancing that evening. It's worth paying attention to how your shoes feel on different floors and adapting accordingly.

Keep Dancing, Keep Caring

Your tango shoes are your most intimate connection to the dance floor. The few minutes you spend maintaining your suede soles translate directly into more confident pivots, smoother walks, and a more enjoyable dance for both you and your partner.

Build sole care into your pre-milonga ritual — brush, check, and you're ready. Your feet and your dance will thank you.
